Things to consider if you are cutting down a tree yourself
Cutting trees is a potentially hazardous process that, if performed incorrectly, can result in property damage and bodily harm. It is crucial to consider safety and experience when undertaking tree removal, as well as ensuring the use of appropriate equipment.
Before proceeding, it is important to realistically assess the size of the tree to be cut. Attempting to fell a large tree with a reciprocating saw is not advisable. This versatile tool is intended for cutting down small-sized green woods and branches.
Decide if it's safe
If you’re reading this page, you’re probably looking to cut down a tree a bit bigger than the struggling fruit tree you planted three years ago. This means you need to take safety precautions from the start.
Assess the tree’s condition
Hopefully you have already given the tree a checkup to see if it needs to come down. We have additional information on damaged trees on our emergency tree care page. If it has a lot of broken, loose, or dead branches, or if your tree is diseased or dying, you can go ahead with your tree removal. But be aware that dead branches can come down on you and could cause serious injury.
Estimate the fall area
Use caution if power lines are nearby. Don’t attempt to cut down a tree if there’s any chance it could fall on the lines, or your equipment could touch the lines. Know which way it will fall and the distance. These are all very important steps in preparing to remove or cut down a tree.

What about permits ?

Cost is always a factor
Removing trees requires consideration of various factors, such as their location (near your house or power lines), type, size, and quantity. The cost of removal depends on the tree’s height, with taller trees generally being more expensive. For instance, a tree ranging from 30 to 60 feet tall incurs a removal cost of $500 to $900. On the other hand, an 80-foot-tall tree’s removal cost ranges from $1,160 to $2,000.
